I’m a cinematographer, based in Los Angeles, working in independent film, music videos, and commercials. Growing up in rural Missouri, there were certainly more deer and fields of corn than there were people. Unsurprisingly, I developed a strong connection with nature and the woods became the playground where my imagination could run wild. Life in a small town can feel isolating at times, but film allowed me the opportunity to see and experience worlds beyond my imagination. It wasn’t until college that I picked up a camera, but I haven’t put it down since. I use imagery to explore character and convey all the nuances of this world that words cannot.
I’ve always gravitated toward character studies that explore isolation, family, and self- limitation. I used my cinematography to explore these very themes in the short film Within the Silence, which played at both the St. Louis International Film Festival and Kansas City International Film Festival. In 2019, I directed and shot the award-winning feature documentary Only the Educated Are Free: The Journey of Michael A. Middleton, which chronicles the story of a man’s life-long battle for civil rights, from navigating Jim Crow laws in his youth to becoming the first black law professor at the University of Missouri. I aspire to continue using my craft to highlight complex characters and grant audiences a glimpse into an experience outside of their own.
